S. Korea, Colombia agree to boost green energy cooperation
SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Yonhap) -- South Korea and Colombia agreed Wednesday to strengthen cooperation in the eco-friendly green energy sector, starting with joint pilot projects in solar energy and wind farming, the government said.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by South Korea's Commerce and Energy Minister Choi Joong-kyung and Colombia's Energy Minister Carlos Enrique Rodado, the countries agreed to increase their ties in the renewable energy and energy service industries.
The MOU is expected to further boost the country's green energy exports, which increased from US$625 million in 2007 to $4.54 billion last year, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said.
Colombia is also moving to increase the use of new, efficient and renewable energy sources under a $250-billion national development plan, the ministry in charge of the country's industrial and energy policies said.
Under the pact, Seoul will form a consortium of South Korean companies that will try to win new Colombian renewable energy projects, and discuss details of such projects with Bogota.
A separate MOU, meanwhile, was signed on the sidelines of the Choi-Rodado meeting, and reached between a consortium led by South Korea's state-run Korea Resources Corp. and Colombia's Institute for the Development of Antioquia, a district located in the northwestern part of the South American country.
