G77 Urges IAEA to Pursue Sustainable Development of N. Technology in Developing States
TEHRAN (FNA)- President of the Group 77 Ali Asqar Soltaniyeh called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to double its efforts to further develop the sustainable use of the civilian nuclear technology in the developing countries.
"The Group still believes that nuclear energy is a clear and safe technology and can play a growing role in the sustainable development of the countries in the 21st century and thereafter, and it asks the Agency to play a key role in the materialization of this goal," Soltaniyeh said in the meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors on Tuesday.
"The Group calls on the Secretariat (of the IAEA) to continue its integrated approach towards sustainable nuclear energy development, specially in the developing countries," he added.
The Group of 77 at the UN is a coalition of developing nations strongly supported by China, designed to promote economic interactions among the member states, and create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the United Nations.
Soltaniyeh also called on the members of the Group 77 to strengthen the safety systems in their nuclear installations after the crisis which happened in Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March.
On March 11, a nine-magnitude earthquake, off the Northeast coast of Japan's main island, unleashed a devastating tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks.
The incident led to fires, explosions or partial meltdowns of six reactor units in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after it knocked out power to the facility's cooling systems.
The destruction was followed by a radiation leak and nuclear fallout has since been reported in many places across the world.
