Seoul shares open higher on U.S. gains

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korean stocks got off to a strong start on Thursday on the back of overnight gains on Wall Street and eased European debt woes, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 2.94 percent, or 51.42 points, to 1,800.58 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
Shares gained ground across the board, with market bellwether Samsung Electronics jumping nearly 4 percent.
U.S. stocks rallied as European leaders disclosed their plan for a common eurozone bond, seen as a key tool to ease the region's worsening debt crisis. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 1.27 percent and the Nasdaq composite index climbed 1.60 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,098.9 won to the greenback as of 9:15 a.m., up 8.9 won from Wednesday's close.
