S. Korea asks foreign countries not to invest in N. Korea's resort

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea has begun to ask foreign countries not to invest or engage in tourism activities at a North Korean mountain resort, an official said Thursday.
The diplomatic effort comes after the North expelled South Korean workers from Mount Kumgang and vowed to legally dispose of all South Korean assets there.
The North has also made a trial run of a cruise from its northeastern port city of Rajin to the mountain resort on its east coast in a move to revitalize the resort by attracting Chinese and other foreign tourists.
South Korea halted the joint tour program at the resort, a key symbol of reconciliation on the divided Korean Peninsula, following the 2008 shooting death of a tourist by a North Korean soldier near the resort.
Seoul has since been demanding Pyongyang's formal apology for the incident and security measures for its tourists.
Last year, the North seized or froze all South Korean assets at the resort before vowing to dispose of the assets in recent weeks in anger over the suspension of the tour program.
South Korea is taking diplomatic measures to countries as part of its moves to protect its property rights at the North's resort, the official said. He declined to elaborate and asked not to be identified, citing office policy.
