ISA REPEAL PART OF MALAYSIA'S TRANSFORMATION: HOME MINISTER
KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - Home Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein says the abolition of the Internal Security Act (ISA) 1960, which was announced by the Prime Minister yesterday, is a journey in the country's transformation.
He said on Fiday that efforts to modify existing laws are necessary to keep abreast with the changing times and to safeguard the people's interest and national security.
"Not just ISA. We are looking at the Emergency Ordinance as well. It is a question of doing what you started two years ago, which is actually to go on the journey of transformation, and it was only yesterday that the Prime Minister indicated to the public what we have been doing and preparing since his first speech," he told reporters after the double National and Merdeka Day celebrations at Dataran Merdeka here.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, in his Malaysia Day 2011 message, announced the abolition of the ISA and three emergency proclamations for Malaysia to be more open and its democracy more dynamic.
Hishammuddin said many things have to be done together by various quarters to formulate new laws to replace the ISA.
Meanwhile, Rural and Regional Development Minister Shafie Apdal said the government's decision in abolishing the ISA was not due to pressure from any
party but to protect the people against acts of violence and terrorism.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Jamil Khir Baharom said the decision to abolish the ISA proves that the ISA is not a weapon used by the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, as claimed by the opposition.
Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Mukhriz Mahathir said the abolition of the ISA is a meaningful gift in conjunction with Malaysia Day and reflects the prime minister's belief that the country is no longer exposed to acts of violence and terrorism.
In a related development, Umno information chief Ahmad Maslan said the abolition of the ISA would put an end to all accusations by opposition parties that the law is used by the government to victimise the people.
It proves the government's courage in defending the people's freedom to expression and speech and its confidence in the existing judicial system, he said in a statement issued here.
Ahmad said the abolition does not mean that the ISA no longer exists because a new law, which will be better and more acceptable to the people, will be formulated to replace it.
What has been abolished is the negative perception that the government is cruel, he added.
