Muroto area in western Japan designated as global geopark

TOKYO, Sept. 18 Kyodo -
The Muroto area in the Shikoku Island in western Japan has been added to the list of UNESCO-sponsored global geoparks, or nature parks with particular importance in terms of geological features, the Paris-based Global Geoparks Network said Sunday.
The designation came after the network, established in 2004 under the sponsorship of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, conducted its screening in Norway over the area.
The area in Kochi Prefecture, the fifth destination in the country to win the membership, is known for a coast and a cape that have erupted during the mega earthquakes in the past.
The four other areas are Mt. Usu in Hokkaido, the Itoigawa tectonic line in Niigata Prefecture, Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture and the coastal area from Kyoto to Tottori prefectures.
A total of 77 areas in 25 countries so far have been designated by the body, whose main mission is to promote geological heritage and support development of geopark territories through tourism, as such geological assets are considered to be of high value to the international community.
The Japan Geopark Committee is set to make a request to the network to add Shimane Prefecture's Oki area to the UNESCO geoparks list in the next screening.
