Ban Ki-moon to hold symposium on fight against terrorism

UNITED NATIONS, September 19 (Itar-Tass) -- International cooperation
in the fight against terrorism and the role of the U.N. global
anti-terrorism strategy will be in the focus of a high-level symposium to
be held by U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Monday.
The one-day forum will be addressed by heads of state and government,
foreign ministers, heads of U.N. specialized structures, including
President of Kyrgyzstan Roza Otunbayeva, President of Switzerland
Micheline Calmy-Rey, European Union High Representative for Foreign
Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, United States Attorney
General Eric Holder, UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova, Executive
Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Yuri Fedotov, and
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem (Navi) Pillay.
Russia will be represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov.
Participants in the forum will discuss such issues as the protection
of human rights and keeping to laws in anti-terrorism fight, the role of
regional organizations in anti-terrorism operations, and efforts to
augment the potential of law enforcement agencies.
Along with the symposium, representatives from global media, including
Itar-Tass, will take part in a roundtable meeting involving top-ranking
officials from the United Nations Secretariat and Security Council,
Interpol, and foreign ministers of Indonesia, Norway, and Saudi Arabia.
