Sae-A's investment plan in Haiti on track: State Dept.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 19 (Yonhap) -- A huge investment project led by a South Korean company to help in the reconstruction of Haiti is moving forward for a spring debut, a senior State Department official said. The Caribbean nation was devastated by an earthquake in 2010.
Early this year, the South Korean apparel giant Sae-A Trading Co. signed a deal with the Haitian government to build a large factory in the nation, a move expected to create about 20,000 jobs. The contract, worth US$78 million, was sponsored by the U.S. government and the Inter-American Development Bank.
It is one of th largest investments in Haiti in more than 50 years.
"The park is on track to be opened in March," the official told reporters on Sunday in New York, according to a transcript released by the department.
The official, who is accompanying Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, was providing a preview of the Haiti Ministerial Meeting Monday in New York.
Speaking on the customary condition of anonymity, the official said Sae-A has invested $70 million and chosen contractors for the construction and management of the complex.
"There has been a lot of interest by a number of different potential investors in the park and so we are stepping through a process with the Haitian government as they prioritize what sectors and industries that they think will best suit their long-term needs," the official said.
