Finance minister, central banker heading to IMF meeting in Washington
SEOUL, Sept. 20 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's top economic policymaker leaves for the United States this week to attend the annual joint general assembly of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group, the finance ministry said Tuesday.
Finance Minister Bahk Jae-wan will attend the meeting in Washington on Friday, where he will discuss with his counterparts from other member countries how to best coordinate policy to cope with global economic risks.
Bahk will address the meeting, which is to focus on the importance of fiscal soundness, financial safety nets, the role of the IMF and global community support for poor countries, the ministry said.
On the sidelines of the plenary session, Bahk will take part in a series of bilateral and multilateral talks with finance ministers, financial leaders and experts, on how best to recover from the ongoing global fiscal crisis.
The minister is also scheduled to attend the Group of 20 (G20) meeting of finance ministers and central bankers to be held on Thursday and Friday to discuss coordinated policy to deal with the eurozone fiscal problems and other global financial problems, the ministry said.
Bank of Korea governor Kim Choong-soo will join the assembly scheduled for Friday and take part in a series of bilateral talks with key members of international financial markets, the central bank said in a press release.
Kim is also scheduled to join the G20 talks on Thursday to discuss policy cooperation between member countries
