Homayun’s new album “Shoqnameh” features Iranian musician Maraghi compositions
TEHRAN, Sept.20(MNA) -- The new album “Shoqnameh” by Iranian singer Homayun Shajarian, featuring compositions by 15th century Iranian theoretician and musician Abdolqader Maraghi, was unveiled here at the Iranian Artist Forum on Sunday.
Composer and compiler Mohammadreza Darvishi, singer Homayun along with his father, the titan of traditional Iranian music Mohammadreza Shajarian, and a group of musicians attended the unveiling ceremony.
The ceremony began with screening part of the documentary by Mojtaba Mir-Tahmasb featuring the process of the album production which took several years to accomplish.
Sadeq Rezaii, director of the Institute for Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults (IIDCYA) made the opening speech as the major investor of the project. “IIDCYA eagerly focuses on the research projects which center on Persian culture and literature,” he said.
The second part of the doc containing words by Mohammadreza Shajarian was next screened for the participants.
“I cannot bring a good example for the value of this project since it bears compositions belonging to a time 600 years ago. It holds signs of the music which has changed over the years. What my son began to do has astonished me as his father; this was not within my abilities. Homayun has proved that he has a unique talent.
“I believe those who listen to this album would assume that they are listening to the Turkish music of Istanbul, but they would find out it is a type of composition with perfect Iranian motifs. Of course, some masters of music might show (a negative) reaction to it since it might not suit their tastes,” he had said in the doc.
Furthermore, Darvishi who has been working on the project for about six years went on stage to speak adding, “This is one of the most significant Iranian music projects. Maraghi is the last musician and heir of Iranian classical music. He is considered a great musician, theoretician of the Timurid dynasty.” (The dynasty was founded by Tamerlane, a Tatar conqueror who lived from 1336 until 1405.)
“Unfortunately, there is no name of him in any academic centers and nobody knows him. It seems his music and style in composing was prevalent in Iran until the Safavid era, and it was later forgotten in Iran, but developed in Turkey.
The ceremony was finished honoring the Abdolqader Maraghi Band who assisted in recoding the songs.
Members Negar Buban, Samer Habibi, Siamak Jahangiri, Arash Shahriari and several others were honored at the end of the ceremony.
