Parliament approves Yang as new chief justice
SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- The National Assembly on Wednesday approved a long-stalled motion approving former Supreme Court justice Yang Sung-tae as chief justice.
The 63-year-old Yang, known for conservative rulings while serving at the Supreme Court from 2005 to earlier this year, was nominated by President Lee Myung-bak last month to lead the nation's top court.
Following a parliamentary hearing earlier this month, ruling and opposition lawmakers passed the motion in a 227-17 vote in a plenary session.
Yang will succeed outgoing Chief Justice Lee Yong-hoon whose six-year term ends on Saturday.
