Chinese production of 'green' cars exceeds 4.3 million units
HONG KONG, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- More than 4.3 million energy-efficient cars have been produced so far in China, official data showed Wednesday, boosted by the government's subsidy program.
In June 2010, China offered incentives for "green" cars, allowing manufacturers to receive a sales subsidy of 3,000 yuan (US$465) for any car with an engine capacity of 1.6 liters or less and fuel economy of at least 34 miles per gallon.
According to the Chinese Ministry of Finance, a total of 4.33 million units of green vehicles were sold in the country during the period of June 2010 to August 2011.
In August alone, 658,000 green cars were produced, it said.
The finance ministry said it spent about 300 billion yuan on 3.57 million vehicles as of the end of August.
Green cars accounted for 50 percent of all the cars with 1.6-liter engine capacities or smaller sold during the 14-month period.
Meanwhile, the Chinese government reportedly is drafting new rules regarding green car technology that include requiring foreign automakers to form joint ventures with local companies.
South Korea's leading Hyundai Motor Co. is preparing to develop a new electric vehicle (EV) brand exclusively for Chinese consumers.
Beijing Hyundai Motor Co., a 50-50 joint venture between Hyundai Motor and Beijing Automotive Co. established in 2002, plans to roll out an EV model in the first half of 2012 to meet growing demand in China for environmentally friendly cars, the company officials said previously.
