Mid-level Korean officials volunteer in developing nations

SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- More than a hundred mid-level South Korean government officials recently traveled to eight developing nations in Asia and Central and South America for volunteer work, Seoul's home affairs ministry said Wednesday.
A total of 113 out of 321 newly hired grade-five officials visited nations such as Cambodia, the Philippines, Ecuador and Paraguay for eight days starting on Sept. 14 as part of a government training program, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security said.
During the trip, they have helped rehabilitate leprosy patients, cared for children at daycare centers, repaired drainage canals, provided free meals to the homeless and engaged in various other kinds of community service, the ministry said.
It marked the first time that overseas volunteer work was added to the government program for training new officials.
"As South Korea's status has changed from aid recipient to donor nation, we wanted to give new government officials a chance to rethink South Korea's status and role and understand its Official Development Assistance (ODA) policy," said an official in charge of educating new government employees at the Central Officials' Training Institute.
