Iran's Former Envoy to Kabul Stresses Rabbani's Opposition to Extremism
TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's former Ambassador to Kabul Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian blasted the killing of the head of Afghanistan's High Peace Council and former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani, and said he was opposed to the empowerment of extremist groups in the country.
"During the meeting that I had with him three days ago, he stressed for the first time that people should be informed about the behavior and thoughts of the extremist stream and the public opinion and scholars of the Muslim world should notify others about this issue in a more straightforward manner," Taherian told FNA on Wednesday.
He pointed to the condemnation of Taliban and extremist moves and groups by Rabbani 10 days before his death, and raised the possibility that Taliban had killed the Afghan leader.
Taherian said the same school of thought which martyred Ahmad Shah Massoud seems to have killed Rabbani now.
The Afghan police confirmed that Rabbani was killed in a terrorist attack on his house in Kabul on Tuesday.
Rabbani was the head of a high-profile council called Afghanistan's High Peace Council formed of former and present senior officials. He also was Afghanistan's president from 1992 to 1996, when the country went through a brutal civil war. His government was ousted by the Taliban in 1996.
