Watchdog orders card firms to tighten data control
SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's financial watchdog said Wednesday it has asked local credit card and consumer finance firms to step up control of customer information in an attempt to prevent data leakages.
The move comes after the personal data of Samsung Card Co. and Hana SK Card Co. customers, including names and mobile phone numbers, were compromised in a recent security breach. Employees at the firms released the data without authorization, raising criticism over card firms' lax internal control.
The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) said it has requested companies to conduct an inspection of their data management systems and report to the watchdog by early October.
The FSS plans to dispatch inspectors to firms whose internal control system and data management system are inadequate, it said.
Concerns about online security breaches have heightened due to a spate of hacking attacks on local financial firms and a popular Internet portal.
Hackers struck the consumer finance firm Hyundai Capital Services Inc. and the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, or Nonghyup, early this year, stealing customers' personal data and crippling online transactions.
The personal data of more than 100 million South Koreans have been compromised in nine data leakage cases since January 2008, according to the data provided by Rep. Jun Byung-hun of the opposition Democratic Party.
