Car ownership in China hits 100 million
HONG KONG, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- The number of car owners in China has reached 100 million, a government report showed Wednesday, as the country sees exploding demand for automobiles fueled by a growing middle class.
The Chinese Ministry of Public Security said in a statement that as of the end of August, 100.48 million vehicles were registered in the country.
The number does not include motorcycles, tractors or trucks.
In terms of overall car ownership, China trails the U.S., which reported 285 million registered vehicles.
From 2006 to 2010, China posted an average annual growth of 9.51 million automobiles.
The first eight months of this year saw 9.83 million new automobiles roll onto the country's roads, 79.45 percent of which were passenger cars, according to the statement.
China is expected to be home to 225 to 300 million cars by 2020.
The country surpassed the U.S. in 2009 and 2010 to become the world's largest consumer of automobiles per annum.
In 2010, a total of 13.8 million passenger cars were sold in China, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said. By comparison, nearly 11.6 million vehicles of passengers cars were sold in the U.S. last year.
