S. Korea bans importation of chestnuts from Fukushima

SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has banned the importation of chestnuts from Japan's Fukushima Prefecture due to radioactive contamination concerns, Seoul's food safety agency said Wednesday.
The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said the move comes after Tokyo prohibited all sales of products from the prefecture.
The region located in the northeastern part of Honshu Island is home to the stricken Fukushima nuclear power station that released radioactive materials into the environment after the massive March 11 quake.
The latest move increases the number of Japanese food products that are temporarily banned by South Korea to eight. Seoul currently prohibits the importation of mushrooms, turnips, tea and other farm produce from Fukushima.
The KFDA, meanwhile, said that no chestnuts from the prefecture have been imported since the nuclear crisis.
