Iranian President Condoles with Afghan Counterpart over Rabbani's Death

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a message to his Afghan counterpart on Wednesday extended his condolences to Hamid Karzai and the Afghan nation and government on the martyrdom of Burhanuddin Rabbani during a suicide bomb attack last night.
In his message, Ahmadinejad condoled with the Afghan president, government and nation over the incident, and voiced sympathy over the killing of the former Afghan president.

"No doubt, the unique role played by this cultivated figure in the advancement of peace and defense for the independence and sovereignty of the Afghan people has been distasteful to the alien mercenaries of organized terrorism who do not stand establishment of peace, stability and peace in Afghanistan and these hirelings have, thus, put his assassination on their working agenda, while they are ignorant of the fact that the radian thoughts and great souls of cultivated individuals will live vividly and forever in the history and for the future generations once they are assassinated," the Iranian president said in his message.

Rabbani, head of the council charged with talking to the Taliban, was killed by a bomb hidden in the turban of the suicide bomber Tuesday night.

It was arguably the most high-profile political assassination since the 2001 US-led invasion dislodged the Taliban, two months after President Hamid Karzai's younger brother was killed in the Taliban's Southern heartland.

Head of Karzai's High Council for Peace for 11 months, Rabbani fronted the government's attempts to broker peace with the Taliban.
