Bengali language to become available on gov't petition portal
SEOUL (Yonhap) - The government's human rights watchdog said Thursday it will launch a Bengali-language service on its official online petition Web site later this week to improve convenience for those speaking the language.
The Bengali service will be available starting Friday on the "e-people" Web site www.epeople.go.kr, where people can post their complaints and ideas to make their voices heard, according to the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC) which operates the Web site.
The new service is expected to improve communication between the Seoul government and those who feel more comfortable using Bengali than any other language, the ACRC said.
Around 13,000 Bangladeshis live here, while more than 1,200 South Koreans live in Bangladesh and Bengal areas of India where Bengali is an official language, according to government data.
The online channel, launched in 2005, offers its services in nine other languages including Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese.
