Car-free day ends with huge traffic jams in Moscow.
MOSCOW, September 23 (Itar-Tass) -- The annual Car-Free Day on
September 22 which encourages motorists to give up their cars for one day
ended with huge traffic jams in the Russian capital city on Thursday night.
As usual, motorists in Moscow ignored the calls to switch to municipal
transport although city officials provided personal examples and halved
the bus fare.
Nevertheless traffic jams were as usual in the city all day round and
the evening many avenues came to a standstill. Thus, the Third Circular
Road was all blocked on the internal side while on the external side only
five kilometers were free.
The Boulevard Circular Road was also moving slowly as well as exits
from Moscow to the surrounding region.
It seems that only Moscow city officials agreed to set an example and
change their limos for subway or bikes.
Deputy Mayors Nikolai Lyamov and Petr Biryukov, as well as City Duma
speaker Vladimir Platonov walked to their offices by feet. Head of the
Moscow environment department Anton Kulbachevsky arrived on a bike, while
Deputy Mayor Lyudmila Shevtsova - by subway and bus.
The regular Car-Free Day was again a failure in Moscow.
