Two active military officers under investigation for e-mail hacking

SEOUL (Yonhap) - Two active-duty military officers are under investigation for allegedly hacking into a university professor's e-mail account, the defense ministry said Friday.
A ministry official said police in Gwangju, a city some 330 kilometers south of Seoul, informed the military that two soldiers were suspects in the hacking incident. The Army's 31st Infantry Division is also investigating the case.
"The military police at the unit and the Gwangju police have launched a joint investigation," the official said. "Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin has also ordered a thorough probe into the matter, and cyber crime investigators from the ministry will also lend a hand."
Earlier this month, Gwangju police said the suspects allegedly stole the professor's user identification and password for his school's portal site and changed the professor's password for his e-mail account. They said hacking took place on three occasions between Aug. 29 and Sept. 2.
"After a primary investigation, the police said they discovered that the two officers' e-mail addresses were used during the hacking," the ministry official said. "But the suspects claimed that their own e-mail accounts had been hacked into and used in this incident without their knowledge, so we need to find out more about the case."
