Azerbaijan's proven gas reserves to be growing - view

BAKU (Itar-Tass) - Proven gas reserves in Azerbaijan
are estimated at 2.5 trillion cubic metres and they will grow over the
coming years, President of the state oil company /SOCAR/ Rovnag Abdullayev
said at the opening of the International Conference on Gas Infrastructure
/Gas Infrastructure World Caspian-2011/.
According to him, in recent years Azerbaijan "discovered large
reserves of natural gas."
"In 2010, on the Caspian shelf the country opened the deposit of Umid,
and this year - Absheron," Abdullayev said. According to preliminary data,
the reserves of these deposits are estimated at 300 billion and 200
billion cubic metres.
Among other promising structures in the Caspian Sea shelf, which will
increase gas potential of Azerbaijan, SOCAR's president mentioned
Nakhichevan and Babak.
"There are plans to develop these promising structures, where
estimated gas reserves make 400 billion cubic metres," he said. "There are
also significant amounts of gas and to lower levels of productive strata
in the fields Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli, and the contract for their
development is being finalised now."
During the current year, Azerbaijan will produce about 30 billion
cubic metres of gas, and in a few years time the country's annual
production will reach 50 billion cubic metres.
SOCAR's president stressed that his country is interested in
diversification of gas supplies, saying that gas from Baku is already
exported to Russia, Turkey, Iran, Georgia and Greece.
"We signed an agreement with the European Union on establishment of
the Southern Gas Corridor and intend to become an active participant in
this process," Abdullayev said. Now Azerbaijan continues negotiations with
Turkey on gas transit to Europe via that country and hopes for their
success. In addition, he noted that Baku is considering a possibility of
gas supplies to Romania and Bulgaria.
SOCAR's president said that the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan and
the country itself have not decided finally a route to transport gas to
Europe after implementation of the second stage of Shah Deniz field
development.
"We still have time, and we consider a particular route in terms of
its commercial appeal," Abdullayev said.
The Southern Gas Corridor unites three pipelines - Nabucco,
Turkey-Greece-Italy and Trans-Adriatic.
