'Iran, regional states able to secure energy supply in Persian Gulf'

TEHRAN, Sept.25(MNA) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran and other regional countries are capable of guaranteeing security in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman for a safe oil supply.

“If the U.S., Britain and NATO leave the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, Iran along with the regional countries can provide the security of energy and the region,” Ahmadinejad told a press conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York on Friday.

“Some pretend that energy security is at risk,” but Iran will guarantee shipping routes and security for oil and other energy supplies, he explained.

Asked on the creation of a hotline in the Persian Gulf between Iran and the U.S. to head off a conflict, he said, “We welcome any approach which avoids confrontation.”

Several U.S. military officials have brought up establishing an emergency contact system to prevent misunderstandings between U.S. Navy ships and planes and Iranian military.

On the 20 percent uranium enrichment by Iran, he said when Iran began to run out of the nuclear fuel needed to operate its medical research reactor in Tehran, it asked the International Atomic Energy Agency and the fuel-producing countries to sell the country the needed fuel but they refused to do so, therefore the Islamic Republic started producing the needed fuel at a much more expense.

However, he said, “Whenever they give us the fuel, we stop the production.”

Asked if Iran would recognize the state of Palestine if Israelis and Palestinians reach a consensus on the establishment of a Palestinian state, he said, “The issue of the Zionist regime is something and the sovereignty right of the Palestinian nation is another issue.”

He added, “We have always supported the Palestinian nation, today (we) also support them.”

Asked why Iran has built its nuclear facilities deep underground, he said all countries construct their nuclear facilities in a safe place, adding every country has the right to determine where to set up its plants.

The president also confirmed contacts between Iranian and Egyptian officials for restoring ties, saying Tehran is waiting for an elected government to take the power in Egypt in order to further pursue matters of mutual ties.

Asked if the UN has been able to resolve crises in the Middle East, he said the Security Council cannot perform its own responsibilities in a correct manner, let alone tackling Middle Eastern problems.

The president said the Security Council is run by the U.S. and certain European countries and he is not hopeful the council can protect other nations’ rights.

On the popular uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East, he said certain countries presume they are managing the popular movements.

He added even some at the UN have said they had previously predicted uprisings in the region, sarcastically calling their remarks “interesting”.
