SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea's 500 largest firms saw their net profit jump 64 percent in 2010 from the previous year, with industry heavyweights Samsung Electronics Co., Hyundai Motor Co. and SK C&C Co. leading the climb, data showed Sunday.
The combined net profit of the top 500 local firms soared 64 percent on-year to 104.9 trillion won (US$89.5 billion), while their revenue increased 9.2 percent from a year ago to 2,452 trillion won, according to the data released by Fortune Korea and Seoul National University.
Samsung Electronics, the world's leading memory chip maker, topped the list for the second straight year with revenue worth 154.6 trillion won, followed by automaker Hyundai Motor with 112.6 trillion won, the data showed.
SK C&C and SK Holdings Co., the de facto holding companies of business conglomerate SK, came next with 91.2 trillion won and 90.7 trillion won, respectively.
Top steelmaker POSCO ranked fifth with 60.6 trillion won and other key affiliates of major South Korean conglomerate groups such as LG Electronics Inc., SK Innovation Co. and Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. also were included among the top 10 companies by revenue.
The data, meanwhile, showed that the affiliates of the country's top 10 conglomerates accounted for 49.1 percent of the tallied firms' revenues.
A total of 51 companies, including 11 construction firms, that were among the 500 companies last year, failed to make it on the top 500 list again, according to the data.
