Leader's Advisor: Assassination Unable to Stop Islamic Movements

TEHRAN (FNA)- Supreme Leader's top advisor for international affairs Ali Akbar Velayati blamed the West for supporting terrorism, and said assassination of prominent figures cannot undermine or block the growing waves of Islamic awakening.
"They (enemies) assume that they can stop the Islamic movements through killing figures like (Burhanuddin) Rabbani, but they are wrong," Velayati said in a meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul.
He pointed to the assassination of Iran's former President Mohammad Ali Rajayee, former Prime Minister Mohammad Javad Bahonar and former Judiciary Chief Mohammad Hossein Beheshti in early 1980s, and said Iran has found out that the western countries are the root cause of these terrorist acts directly or indirectly.
Also during the meeting, Velayati conveyed Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei's condolences over the martyrdom of former Afghan President and Head of Afghanistan's High Council of Peace Burhanuddin Rabbani to the Afghan president and nation.
Rabbani was killed when he was in a meeting with Taliban militants on Tuesday.
During the meeting, one of the Taliban militants detonated his explosives that were reportedly concealed in his turban.
Five senior Afghan officials, who were present in the gathering, were also killed in the explosion.
Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack.
