Japan pledges another $21 mil. of food aid to drought-hit Africa
NEW YORK, Sept. 24 Kyodo -
Japan on Saturday pledged an additional $21 million in food assistance to the so-called Horn of Africa countries to help ease their food crisis caused by the worst drought in the last 60 years.
Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba made the pledge at a U.N. ministerial mini-summit on the Horn of Africa crisis. The new aid will add to nearly $100 million of assistance Japan has already implemented for the four countries -- Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti, Gemba said.
Noting that more than 13 million people in the four countries are facing food shortages due to the prolonged drought, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon told the summit, ''Three quarters of a million men, women and children are at imminent risk of starvation, (while) 4 million need our urgent help.''
Gemba said in his speech to the meeting that Japan received ''countless messages of sympathy from African countries, and also a tremendous amount of support'' after the March earthquake and tsunami disaster.
''In order to live up to the cordial solidarity expressed by African countries, Japan will act in cooperation with Africa on measures to address the profound drought-induced damage,'' he said.
