Сhina shipowner of freighter running aground arrives in Kamchatka
PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, September 26 (Itar-Tass) -- Officials from the Chinese company Tong Yuan Shipping, which owns the dry cargo vessel Aykishun that ran aground in the Avacha Bay off Kamchatka on September 2, arrived on the peninsula to settle the problems of the ship in distress, Kamchatka's minister of special programs Sergei Khabarov told Itar-Tass on Monday.
The working group is made up of a lawyer, a technical specialist and officials from the insurance company. The dry cargo vessel will be
thoroughly examined, its onboard systems will be tested for operation, all the opportunities to bring the vessel afloat will be studied and legal issues will be settled.
The dry cargo ship, which is registered in the Phnom Penh port and
sailed under the flag of Cambodia, ran aground not far from the Mayachny Cape as a result of a navigation mistake in the entry to the
Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky port. The dry cargo vessel was carrying the crew of 21 Chinese citizens, 250 tonnes of fuel and 5,200 tonnes of building materials. No one was injured in the incident.
The ship is still stuck aground. The fuel is being pumped from the
vessel. The building materials remain onboard, but up to 90% of cargoes are already spoiled over rains and storms, Khabarov said.
The sea incident area is closed for navigation. The water pollution in the bay around the ship in distress is not reported. The Aykishun crew, which was evacuated on the coast on the day of the incident, is staying in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
