Russia Pacific warships arrive in Japan's Maizuru for rescue drill
TOKYO, September 26 (Itar-Tass) -- The convoy of Russian Pacific Fleet warships headed by the guards missile-carrying cruiser Varyag arrived in the Japanese port Maizuru on the western coast of the Honshu Island on Monday.
During a five-day visit to Japan Russian naval sailors will
participate in traditional joint sea search-and-rescue exercises, which will be already the 12th ones in the cooperation between the Russian Navy and the Japanese Self-Defence Forces. The destroyer Akebono will be a host ship from Japan.
Under the scenario of the current exercises, a fire broke out onboard the dry cargo vessel in the Sea of Japan (the East Sea). Russian and Japanese naval sailors are planning to practice the rescue of the crew of a ship in distress with the assistance of helicopters and to put out the fire.
Russian naval sailors will also have several official and unofficial meetings with their Japanese fellow sailors and will participate in volleyball and football competitions.
