Iran Calls for G15 More Active Role

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi asked the G15 to play a more active role on the international scene through bolstering ties and cooperation among its member states.
Salehi made the remarks during his address to the G15 summit in New York on Sunday where he voiced Tehran's full support for the G15 to help the grouping achieve its goals.

"I am quite confident that the grouping would be able to play a more important role at international levels using the capabilities of each member state," he said.

He said to attain the goal, the G15 should identify and use its capabilities and interests properly.

Since G15 countries account for one third of the world's total population, it is necessary that member countries closely cooperate with one another and help meet their economic needs in various fields such as agriculture, manufacturing, industries, infrastructure and rendering services, Salehi said.

He further called on the grouping to identify and remove the existing hurdles in a bid to accelerate the trend of its activities.

On Saturday, Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also stressed Tehran's strong support for the G15 in a bid to help broaden the relations and cooperation among the regional countries.

Ahmadinejad made the remarks in a meeting with his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Percy Rajapaksa on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York.

"Hegemonic powers are worried about the expansion and reinvigoration of multilateral relations among those nations looking for justice," he added.

"Iran supports the measures taken by this group in order to promote regional ties," Ahmadinejad reiterated.

The Sri Lankan president, for his part, emphasized close relations between regional groupings, and stated that Iran's experience could be valuable in strengthening and activating regional cooperation as a goal pursued by the G15.
