Yonhap News TV signs content exchange accord with Taiwan's TVBS
TAIPEI, Sept. 26 (Yonhap) -- Yonhap News TV, an all-news cable channel to be launched later this year, signed a content exchange agreement with Taiwan's leading TV network TVBS on Monday, the latest in a series of such deals the South Korean broadcaster has made with foreign partners.
Park Jung-chan, president and CEO of Yonhap News Agency, signed the memorandum of understanding with Yang Ming, a TVBS executive, in a ceremony at the Taiwanese broadcaster's headquarters in Taipei. The agreement calls for a broad exchange of news, documentary and other programs between the two sides.
The MOU is the latest in a series of agreements Yonhap News TV has forged with foreign TV stations in recent months. These include deals with Al Jazeera Satellite Network; Russia Today (RT), a Moscow-based 24-hour news-only channel; and the Hawaii-based Korean channel KBFD-TV.
It has also signed content exchange agreements with 31 major news agencies, including the Associated Press.
"Yonhap News TV is aiming to become a global medium," Park said at the signing ceremony. "I expect that the establishment of the partnership between the two sides will play an important role in promoting cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between South Korea and Taiwan."
Yang said he hopes the agreement will help the two companies steadily increase their mutual exchanges and relationship. Through such content exchange, Yang said he hopes the two stations will grow as global broadcasters.
Launched in 1993, TVBS is a leading TV network in Taiwan and was the first Taiwanese station to start satellite broadcasting. The network has four channels -- TVBS-G, TVBS-News, TVBS-Infortainment and TVBS-Asia. TVBS-News is a 24-hour channel and all four channels are broadcast via satellite and cable.
TVBS was first established jointly by Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) of Hong Kong and ERA Group of Taiwan, and became a wholly owned subsidiary of TVB in 2005. It is considered competitive in offering a variety of programs and real-time news.
Monday's agreement is expected to greatly improve news and information sharing between the two countries, which have grown closer due in part to a boom in South Korean pop culture overseas, especially in Asian nations, officials said.
Yonhap News TV is an affiliate of Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's key newswire service that produces content for newspapers, broadcasters, Internet portals, the government and private enterprises, distributing some 3,000 news articles per day. Yonhap has 62 reporting staff in 46 major cities in 35 countries as well as the most extensive nationwide network in South Korea, and provides daily news in Korean, Arabic, English, Japanese, Chinese, French and Spanish.
