Tide of history reaches shores of Palestine
TEHRAN, Sept.26(MNA) -- There is no doubt that the Palestinians are an oppressed nation deprived of their basic rights by the Zionist occupiers of their homeland.
But after many years of inaction, world leaders have finally begun to seriously discuss the issue of Palestinian statehood.
Yet, unfortunately, the United States and certain other Western countries are still supporting the Zionist regime.
The late Imam Khomeini, the Founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, invited Palestinian Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat to Iran, encouraged him to continue his struggle for an independent Palestine, and gave him moral support.
After the Islamic Revolution, Iran closed down the Israeli Embassy in Tehran and gave it to the Palestinians, and today it is still the Palestinian Embassy.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahamadinejad also expressed support for Palestinian statehood at the latest session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Ahmadinejad has often said that Israel is a racist entity established after World War II through the connivance of the Western powers, which brought Jewish immigrants from all over the world, but especially from Europe, to occupied Palestine and facilitated the expulsion of about 800,000 Palestinians from their homeland.
But now, everything has almost come full circle.
On Friday, the Palestinians presented their proposal for recognition of Palestinian statehood and full UN membership to the United Nations, setting a process in motion.
There are some who believe that U.S. President Barack Obama’s ultimate objective is to help the Palestinians. However, in his speech at the United Nations, Obama disappointed most of the world when he repeated Israel’s position and said that only Palestinian-Israeli negotiations can lead to a Palestinian state.
After all their suffering and all the sacrifices they have made in the liberation struggle, the Palestinians should not have to see their hopes dashed again.
At this stage of the game, when there is finally a real opportunity for the Palestinians to achieve their noble goal of establishing an independent state, it is ridiculous for Western countries to claim they intend to take a neutral stance on the issue.
In a delaying tactic, French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged the UN General Assembly to grant Palestine non-member observer status.
However, all the delaying tactics in the world cannot stop the tide of history, which is rising and will soon splash on the shores of an independent Palestinian state.
