Hyundai, Kia to see combined exports top 2 mln units this year
SEOUL (Yonhap) - Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. are expected to see their combined vehicle exports top 2 million units this year, helped by rising demand for their new models, industry sources said Tuesday.
The country's top two automakers exported a total of 1.44 million units through August this year, up 13 percent from a year earlier, according to the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association (KAMA).
In terms of value, their outbound shipments jumped 30 percent to reach US$20.6 billion over the cited period, it said.
The figures could translate into monthly sales of some 180,000 units worth $2.5 billion on average.
If the current pace continues, exports of vehicles by Hyundai and Kia are highly likely to top 2 million, KAMA said.
Last year, Hyundai and Kia exported a total of some 1.99 million units worth $25.3 billion.
The sharp rise in overseas sales for the year is attributed to hefty demand for their new models such as the Avante and Sorento R.
