Weather agency to introduce 'flu infection index'

By Oh Seok-min
SEOUL (Yonhap) - The nation's weahter forecast agency is to start alerting residents to how likely they are to catch a cold as part of its efforts to address growing public concern about health and disease, officials said Tuesday.
The so-called "flu infection index" will be calculated based on daily weather conditions, including temperature and humidity, and rate the chances of catching a cold or flu at very high, high, moderate or low, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).
Starting in late November, two-day flu forecasts will be available in Seoul, Busan and other major cities nationwide, it added.
The index will be provided through February of each year during when the nation is normally gripped by a cold spell, the weather agency said.
"We have developed the flu index after studying relations between weather changes and the chances of getting a cold," KMA spokesman Kim Seung-bai said. "The new index is expected to contribute to minimizing suffering from such illness."
