Iran urges efforts to combat racism, racial discrimination

TEHRAN, Sept. 27 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi called on the international community to make serious efforts to combat racism and racial discrimination.

Salehi made the remarks during a speech at the High-level Meeting of the General Assembly in New York on September 22, which was held to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action that was adopted in 2001.

The General Assembly adopted by consensus the resolution titled “United against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance”.

During his speech, Salehi said the Durban Declaration is one of the greatest achievements of humanity for the following reasons:

(1) After experiencing life of humiliation, oppression, and injustice for centuries as a result of slavery, classic (colonialism) and neocolonialism, and systematic racism in the form of apartheid in South Africa and the occupied Palestinian territories, the international community became determined to hold an international conference at the highest level, and the international community made a departure from apartheid in new Durban.

(2) For the first time in history, civil societies and non-governmental organizations along with governments participated in the struggle against racism, hostility, and racial discrimination and proved their roles and importance in the campaign against the violation of human rights which illuminated the path for the future (generation).

(3) The adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action is regarded as an achievement which signified the active participation of governments in the struggle against racism and racial discrimination.

The Iranian foreign minister also called for efforts to be made to help safeguard the achievements of the Durban conference, which was held in 2001.

The United States and certain other countries, the self-proclaimed advocates of human rights and democracy, made efforts to create stumbling blocks in the way of the adoption of the declaration, Salehi said.

He added, “One of the main issues which was emphasized during the process of (the adoption of) the Durban (Declaration) was (the promotion of) respect for cultural diversity, but unfortunately the despicable instances of racism and racial discrimination have not been eliminated in the world, and we are witnessing the new forms of this inhuman phenomenon.”

“The sustenance of state apartheid in the occupied Palestinian territories, the promotion of Islamophobia, the violation of the rights of Muslim minorities, the racist attitude toward immigrants, indigenous people, non-white people, and ethnic minorities, and most importantly the promotion of the use of racist language among radical groups, political parties, politicians, and lawyers in certain countries, have raised concerns over a new tide of racism,” Salehi stated.
