S. Korea to provide clean cook stoves to East Timor
SEOUL, Sept. 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is to donate US$400,000 to provide clean-burning stoves for school kitchens in East Timor through the World Food Program, officials said Tuesday.
The humanitarian aid is aimed at preventing chronic malnutrition and ill health among East Timorese children, Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho Byung-jae said.
Experts say dirty cooking stoves, which produce toxic chemicals by burning wood or other fuel cause a major health problem for children in developing nations.
"The money will be used to install fuel-efficient, clean-burning stoves in kitchens at 100 schools in East Timor," Cho said.
South Korea operated a military unit of about 400 soldiers in East Timor from 1999 to 2003 as part of a U.N. peacekeeping mission. Oil-rich but cash-poor East Timor won formal independence in 2002.
