U.S. national laboratory opens joint lab with S. Korean university
JEONJU, South Korea, Sept. 27 (Yonhap) -- In an effort to boost its research profile, a regional South Korean university here Tuesday opened a joint laboratory facility shared by it and a national U.S. research institution.
The joint facility between Chonbuk National University and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) takes up some 1,700 square meters of the university campus in Jeonju, 243 kilometers south of Seoul, the university said.
During ongoing construction of the partially completed lab, which will continue until 2013, a large-scale complex and teleconference room will be installed. The facility is named the LANL-CBNU.
About 11 billion won (US$ 9.4 million) will be spent on construction, primarily to develop technology to assess the stability of structures made with composite materials, according to the university.
The institutions will offer joint diploma courses, allowing students take classes at each, it added.
LANL belongs to the United States Department of Energy and is managed and operated by Los Alamos National Security (LANS) in Los Alamos, New Mexico.
Its laboratory is one of the largest science and technology facilities in the world and its main research areas include national security, space exploration, renewable energy, medicine, nanotechnology and supercomputing.
