Seoul shares open higher on U.S. gains

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korean stocks got off to a strong start on Wednesday as investor sentiment got a boost from overnight rallies on Wall Street, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) climbed 10.71 points, or 0.62 percent, to 1,746.42 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
Most shares traded in positive territory, but insurers underperformed the market, with top player Samsung Life Insurance slipping 0.75 percent.
U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday on hopes eurozone policymakers will soon move to solve the economic bloc's debt crisis. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 1.33 percent and the tech-focused NASDAQ composite rose 1.2 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,171 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m., up 2.1 won from Tuesday's close.
