S. Korea's cargo handling at seaports rises 7.6 pct in Aug.

SEOUL (Yonhap) - The amount of cargo processed at South Korea's seaports grew 7.6 percent from a year earlier last month as an increase of transshipment cargo more than offset a drop in the amount of import-export cargo going through the ports, the government said Wednesday.
The volume of cargo handled at seaports amounted to 105.51 million tons in August, according to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.
The growth came mainly from increased shipments of cement and metal ore, which increased 15.1 percent and 14.7 percent on-year, respectively. Shipments of automobiles also rose 12.7 percent from the same period last year while those of sand and steel products dropped 9.6 percent and 7.4 percent, respectively.
The volume of container cargo handled at the local seaports also grew 6.6 percent to nearly 1.78 million 20-foot-equivalent units (TEUs), according to the ministry.
The amount of import-export cargo shrank 0.5 percent from a year earlier to a little over 1.05 million TEUs, but that of transshipment cargo, or cargo processed here while en route to a different final destination, jumped 18.3 percent to 689,000 TEUs.
Busan, the largest port, located in the nation's southeast, retained its fifth spot in the world in terms of container cargo handling, which amounted to 1.37 million TEUs, up 11.7 percent from a year ago.
