S. Korea's manufacturing sentiment drops for Q4

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korean manufacturers' confidence fell for the fourth quarter from three months earlier, although a majority of firms expect better business conditions, a government poll showed Wednesday.
The manufacturers' business survey index (BSI) for the October-December period came to 104, down from 111 for the third quarter of the year, according to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
The online survey polled 501 manufacturers across industrial sectors. A reading above 100 means optimists outnumber pessimists.
The actual BSI or real conditions for business in the July-September period was tallied at 91 as sales both at home and abroad worsened to 92 and 95, respectively, the ministry said.
"Still, the index for the fourth quarter remains above the baseline, meaning companies expect business conditions to somewhat improve," it said in a press release.
"This apparently reflects the companies' faith in our economy's ability to cope with crises as it comes amid continued uncertainties such as a slowdown of the global economy."
The BSI for overall sales came to 108 while the index for exports also remained positive at 103. Only the index for ordinary income registered below the baseline at 98.
By industrial sector, the electronics industry remained most positive for conditions in the fourth quarter with a BSI reading of 115, followed by the automobile industry with a 105 reading. Semiconductor manufacturers expected business conditions would further deteriorate, registering a BSI reading of only 83.
