China set to raise LCD panel tariffs: sources
By Kim Young-gyo
HONG KONG (Yonhap) - China is expected to increase soon import duties on components used in the manufacture of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, industry sources here said Wednesday, a move expected to benefit domestic manufacturers.
The sources, who asked not to be named, said Chinese authorities see the adjustment of tariffs as "imperative", and expect they will not wait long to announce the raise.
Since August, Chinese officials have been collecting input from local companies over raising import duties on LCD TV cells and modules. The process for making an LCD panel includes assembling arrays, cells and modules.
The Chinese government could increase the duty on 32-inch and larger LCD TV cells from 3 percent to 10 percent, and from 5 percent to 12 percent on those smaller than 32 inches, according to market researcher DisplaySearch.
Market watchers say the move is aimed at establishing China's own industrial chain for LCD panels and reducing the country's reliance on foreign suppliers.
"If the government increases import tariffs for LCD panels, it will help domestic firms improve their competitiveness," said Xu Weiqing, researcher at Beijing-based Zero2IPO Research Center.
