S. Korea's imports of rare earth materials spike in August

SEOUL, Sept. 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's imports of rare earth materials jumped last month from a year earlier amid increasing demand for such materials mostly used in high-tech products, customs data showed Wednesday.
Imports of rare earth materials that include scandium and yttrium came to a total of 315 tons last month, up 42.3 percent from a year earlier, according to a report by the Korea Customs Service.
Countries in the world are rushing to secure rare earth elements mostly used in hybrid, electric vehicles, liquid crystal displays and other high-tech equipment. South Korea imported two thirds of its rare earth material needs from China.
Imports of other rare metals also spiked.
Manganese imports came to 10,280 tons last month, up 36 percent from a year earlier, while molybdenum imports also rose 14.6 percent on-year to 1,560 tons, the report showed.
Cobalt and tungsten also saw their imports jump 27.6 percent and 15.5 percent to 730 tons and 139 tons, respectively, according to the report.
