Canadian FM Voices Anger at UN Decision on Electing Iranian Deputy

TEHRAN (FNA)- Appointment of an Iranian deputy president for the 66th UN General Assembly made Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird so furious that he could not hide his anger at the decision of the world body and blamed envoys of the world nations for practicing their will in a free and democratic election.
"Why should Iran take the responsibility of the Assembly's deputyship and maintain its position in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)?" he protested at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York, blaming envoys of the world countries for electing an Iranian in a democratic move.

Members of the ECOSOC in May agreed to renew Iran's membership despite the US and Canada's efforts to block the move.

The US and Canada had opposed the renewal of Iran's membership in ECOSOC on the grounds that Tehran's standpoint differs from that of Washington and Ottawa.

Following the failure of attempts by the representatives of the US and Canada to block the renewal of Iran's membership, Washington requested that the issue be put to a vote.

The majority of the 54 ECOSOC member states voted in favor of renewing Iran's membership, according to a press release by the office of the Iranian envoy to the UN.

ECOSOC serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues.

Iran has been an active member of the ECOSOC that has resisted attempts by Western countries to bring up "unethical" issues at the UN council.

Also, Iran's Ambassador to the UN Mohammad Khazayee in June was elected as one of the deputies of the president of the 66th UN General Assembly meeting.

Khazayee said at the time that the election of Tehran to deputy presidency of the 66th UN General Assembly would serve as a good opportunity to highlight just positions in the global order.

"The election of the Islamic Republic of Iran as a deputy to the UN General Assembly (UNGA) (President) and its membership in the General Committee is a good opportunity for asserting fair positions in the world order," Khazaei said after a meeting of the UN General Assembly.
