Iranian DM Dismisses Necessity for Establishment of Hotline with US

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi dismissed the necessity for setting up a military hotline with the US, and called on Washington to pull out its forces from the region to avoid tension and possible confrontation with Iran.
"They want to have a hotline so that in case of tension, we can settle it but we believe that if they are not deployed in the region, no tension will occur," Vahidi told reporters on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting in Tehran on Wednesday.

He also reiterated that the US warships and cruisers which seek to pass through the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf must respond to the questions asked by the Iranian Navy.

"They are under the intelligence control and domination of our Navy," the defense minister continued.

Also, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy Ali Fadavi yesterday rejected the US request for establishing a "red phone" link, saying, "We would establish direct contact with the United States if we would ever go to the Gulf of Mexico."

He rejected the US demand, and explained, "In the view of the Islamic Republic of Iran, the presence of the US in the Persian Gulf is illegitimate and makes no sense."

Some US media outlets have recently quoted an unidentified US defense official as saying that the US is considering setting up a direct military hotline with Iran after a series of close encounters between US and Iranian forces in the Persian Gulf.
