Japan, ASEAN vice defense ministers to cooperate amid S. China Sea row

TOKYO, Sept. 28 Kyodo - Vice defense ministers of Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations agreed Wednesday that it is necessary to work together with other regional partners such as the United States in the wake of Beijing's growing maritime interests in the South China Sea, Japanese officials said.
Bearing in mind China's assertive claims in that area, some of the 10 members of the ASEAN nations called for the need to create a common understanding on the interpretation of international law regarding freedom of navigation while urging Japan and other regional partners to actively cooperate in the issue, the officials said.
Their meeting, the third since 2009, came in the wake of territorial disputes between China and some ASEAN members such as the Philippines and Vietnam over a chain of islands in the South China Sea known as the Spratly Islands.
