Samsung Electronics to seek M&As more aggressively

By Kim Young-gyo
HONG KONG, Sept. 29 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday it will seek mergers and acquisitions (M&As) with other companies more aggressively in order to stay competitive in the global market.
"All the while, Samsung Electronics has been rather passive toward M&As," Kwon Oh-hyun, president of Samsung's Device Solution division, said in a press event held in Taiwan, according to company officials.
"Samsung will seek M&As more aggressively in the fields that are inevitable for the future and in technologies with growth potential."
His remarks were in line with calls made by Lee Kun-hee, chairman of Samsung Electronics, last month after Google Inc. announced plans to purchase Motorola Mobility, a hardware company that makes many phones based on Google's Android operating system.
Lee urged his company to step up efforts to develop its software competitiveness, even through mergers and acquisitions if necessary,
Kwon, who is in charge of Samsung's chip and flat panel components, was confident that the world's largest chipmaker would remain competitive amid the global economic turmoil.
"The semiconductor industry growth will slow down until uncertainties over the European and U.S. economies are resolved. Under these circumstances, further polarization between companies that have advanced technologies and companies that do not will take place," he said.
"As Samsung has technologies two generations in advance compared to rivals, it will be able to maintain its competitiveness for a while."
Global chipmakers are facing increasing pressure to adopt more advanced technologies in order to lower production costs, as weak demand for personal computers and the limping global economy has battered prices of memory chips this year.
