Seoul city to raise subway, bus fares by 200 won

SEOUL (Yonhap) - The Seoul Metropolitan Government is working on a plan to raise subway and bus fares by 200 won (US$0.17) by next year to make up for rising deficits from transfer fee discounts and energy costs, officials said Friday.
The capital city plans to first increase the fares from 1,000 won (cash fare for adult) to 1,100 won in November, then raise them an additional 100 won in the first half of next year, city officials said.
The Seoul metropolitan subway's budget registered a 478.6 billion won deficit last year, up 24.1 percent on 2007, when transfer fee discounts were adopted. The city bus operators' deficit jumped to 306.9 billion won, a 86 percent rise from 2007, according to the city data.
There are nine metropolitan subway lines connecting Seoul and nearby Gyeonggi Province.
