China expected to introduce subsidies for LED makers: sources

By Kim Young-gyo
HONG KONG (Yonhap) - China is expected to introduce subsidies for its light-emitting diode (LED) makers this year, industry sources here said Friday, as part of its efforts to promote energy saving and efficiency among its residents.
The sources, who asked not to be named, said Chinese authorities are working on subsidizing domestic LED makers starting in the fourth quarter.
The Chinese government is seeking to gradually expand the proportion of LEDs in the lighting market.
"This will promote an expansion of the market for semiconductor lighting applications," a source said.
According to the Chinese government's development blueprint for the 2011-2015 period, the country plans to phase out the use of general lighting incandescent lamps, with an estimated annual savings of 48 billion kilowatt hours.
The global LED industry is expected to grow 38 percent to US$20.8 billion this year from $15.1 billion in 2010.
China, which is currently the world's fourth-largest LED maker with about a 13 percent market share, is expected to expand, boosted by government support policies to promote energy-efficient lighting.
Some market watchers expect China's global market share in LEDs to reach 32 percent in the first quarter of 2012, surpassing South Korea and Taiwan.
