RF General Consulate in Sapporo concerned over RF vessel detention
TOKYO, September 30 (Itar-Tass) - The Russian General Consulate in
Sapporo (the Japanese island of Hokkaido) "is following closely the
development of the events in the incident, when a Russian fishing trawler was detained in the exclusive economic zone," a source in the Russian General Consulate in Sapporo told Itar-Tass on Friday.
"On Friday morning we were informed in Japan that overnight to Friday the captain of a fishing vessel Vladimir Melnikov, 60, was detained on accusations of crab poaching. We are following closely the development," the source said.
"However, this incident causes our deep concerns, because, first, this is the first similar detention made in the exclusive economic zone," the source in the Russian General Consulate said. "Secondly, the negotiations over fishing in a 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone between Russia and Japan ended in Sapporo on Friday," the source said.
The Japanese Coast Guard detained a fishing trawler with the Russian crew in the Japanese territorial waters north off Hokkaido overnight to Friday. Japan affirms that the fishing vessel under the flag of the Kingdom of Cambodia was poaching crab. Six people were staying onboard the fishing trawler. According to the Japanese Coast Guard, six crewmen are Russian citizens. The captain of the trawler Vladimir Melnikov is passing an inspection in the Hokkaido Coast Guard department, where the latter was brought after the detention. Other crewmen are staying onboard the vessel.
The exclusive economic zone, within which only Japan can have any
economic activities, makes 200 nautical miles. Other vessels can sail in this zone, but are banned to go fishing or undertake any other economic activities.
