Over 200 couples to participate in unusual race on Arbat Street.

MOSCOW (Itar-Tass) - More than 200 couples will participate
in an unusual race called "A Burden of One's Own Choice Is Not Felt" on
Moscow's Arbat Street on Sunday. The husbands will have to carry their
beloved wives.
The competition's organizers said that such races were a long-standing
tradition in Munich, which annually hosts the famous Bavarian Oktoberfest
festival. The entertainment had come to Munich from the city of Regensburg
in the northeast of Bavaria where it was particularly popular in the last
century. About a thousand men used to gather at such festivals in the
past. They had to cross a bridge over the Regen River at its inflow into
the Danube carrying their wives in any possible way: in their arms, around
their necks or under the armpit. The main condition was that the lady
wasn't supposed to touch the ground. The winner of this unusual
competition traditionally received five casks of freshly brewed beer and a
train ticket to Munich to attend the next Oktoberfest.
Everything during the race on Novy Arbat is expected to resemble the
Bavaria of the past century. A distance of 75 meters was measured. It was
named "the Resenburg beer mile". The winner will get absolutely the
same super prize as the Regensburg runners or carriers: a ton of freshly
brewed beer and an air ticket to Munich for the Oktoberfest-2012.
The participants and judges of the festival will include stars of
Russian sport and show business.
