S. Korean consulate general in HK to host cultural festival

By Kim Young-gyo
HONG KONG (Yonhap) - The South Korean consulate general in Hong Kong said Monday it will host a cultural festival later this month in a move to promote different aspects of Korean culture in the Chinese territory.
The "Festive Korea" will start on Thursday and will be held in Hong Kong throughout the month of October after a year of preparation, officials at the consulate general said.
"Hong Kong is not only an international finance center, but also a cosmopolitan metropolis where east meets west. It is my great pleasure to present the first 'Festive Korea' in Hong Kong -- the core city of Asia and the world," said Jun Ok-hyun, South Korean consul general in Hong Kong.
"I hope 'Festive Korea' will encourage meaningful collaboration and deepen mutual understanding between Hong Kong and Korea. I sincerely wish the friendship between Korea and Hong Kong to progress continuously."
Hong Kong has been South Korea's fourth-largest export market after China, the U.S. and Japan, while South Korea is Hong Kong's sixth-largest. Bilateral trade between the two economies amounted to more than US$24 billion in 2010.
South Korean TV dramas, movies, pop songs and fashion have become increasingly popular in Hong Kong, setting off a wave of Korean language study and practice of the traditional Korean marital art taekwondo.
The festival will comprise a series of diverse cultural, arts and sport events, including a Korean contemporary art exhibition, Korean film festival, Korean multimedia seminar, taekwondo performance, Korean tourism photo exhibition, Korean Hong Kong Friendship Day, Korean cuisine promotion and an electronics expo.
